Atlanta Film Society presents Airport Shorts 5.0
Hartsfield Jackson Airport Art Program
The Airport Art Program develops and integrates art, exhibits and performances into the fabric of the Airport environment for the benefit of passengers and employees. The Program has three major components: commissioning artists to create site specific artwork, presenting rotating exhibitions, and scheduling performing arts series. Each part of the program strives to meet the Department of Aviation's goal of becoming the world's best airport by exceeding customer expectations.
Since 2012, The Atlanta Film Society has partnered with the Airport Art Program to present AIRPORT SHORTS: a showcase of short films presented on nearly 30 screens throughout the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal. Previous editions of AIRPORT SHORTS have been curated and commissioned, screening 365 days a year for audiences of up over 14 million travelers in the International Terminal.
For the 5th edition, AIRPORT SHORTS will see new life featured on the CNN Channel, viewable on over 500 screens throughout the entire Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with a potential audience of over 100 million travelers each year. AIRPORT SHORTS will be featured on the channel once every hour, and we are seeking 11 short films to debut on the channel in 2020.
This project is open to filmmakers located both in the US and internationally, but special consideration will be given to Georgia based filmmakers and filmmakers from the American South.
The Atlanta Film Society would like to officially invite you to craft a proposal for a visually arresting cinematic piece. Films must be 45-54 seconds. The theme for the 5th edition is “Connections” and may be interpreted however you choose. Airport SHORTS is intended to not only act as a showcase of independent films, but to feature content that can provide comfort to travelers during a busy and potentially stressful day of travel. For that reason, it is preferred that works contain an element of humor, wonder, or awe. These films are intended to be a source of entertainment and even respite for a (possibly nervous) passenger about to board a flight. Aim to make someone marvel at your piece and differentiate yourself from the advertisements and news content that make up the channel’s programming.
Filmmakers will be given 10 weeks to execute their chosen pieces. A $750 honorarium will be awarded to each participating filmmaker. Collectively, the films will premiere on the channel in April 2020. Each film will play on the channel twice a day for a period of one year.
Selected films will also be Official Selections of the 2020 Atlanta Film Festival, and will be featured onsite at the festival from April 30-May 10, 2020.
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
Your written proposal should be between 250 and 400 words.
An introduction must be included. Identify yourself as a filmmaker/artist, describe works that you’ve produced in the past and where they have been featured.
Your proposal should be as transparent as possible. We should be able to gauge your concept development and objectives. The Airport Art Program prefers final selections that reflect an excitement or intrigue regarding movement, exploration, and travel.
A reel, links to your films, or a tangible representation of your work must be included. An understanding of your film experience is imperative.
Proposals must be submitted by December 17, 2019
Selected projects will be notified by December 23, 2019
Finished projects will be due on March 1, 2020
FILM REQUIREMENTS (no exceptions will be made)
Films must be between 45 seconds and 54 seconds. This run time includes credits which should be 5 seconds or less.
If the film contains dialogue, English-language subtitles must be embedded in the film file.
Films must be PG. The screens are freely available for viewing throughout the airport so the basics apply: no nudity or violence.
Films will be available for online viewing throughout their run at the airport. Please do not submit if you are not okay with your film being publicly available online.
Unlike previous editions, Airport Shorts 5.0 will be presented alongside the CNN Channel Programming. All screens will be horizontal, and your film must adhere to this aspect ratio.
