We all have a voice, but how many of us are willing to find it? All of the parables we heard during our childhood from parents and grandparents and the various others that we encounter on a daily basis suggest that we have far more stories inside us than we think. In essence, we all have something to say with a very specific perspective. This screenwriting course is created for underrepresented and minority writers to develop stories that are often untold. While the course will also focus on the basic tenets of screenwriting including structure, tone, and character, its main focus will be to help writers discover their inner voice and write stories that break convention.

Students are encouraged to bring in the first draft of a short screenplay or an outline for a short they are interested in developing. Students will learn how to introduce and develop a character, create and maintain a consistent tone, and write a story that further enhances their voice and perspective. The story you walk away with will be a reflection of how you see the world, not how someone else thinks you should see it. Since this is a smaller development workshop, we will go over each and every student’s screenplay and outline in class and the instructor will also be providing 1 on 1 time to each student.
