In this 2-hour online class, Kevin Mellon (Archer, Black Lightning) will go through a short scene from a screenplay and break down his process for storyboarding. This will be a summary course, where he will go over the broad strokes of reading and interpreting a script, breaking down a scene in terms of the beats required to visually tell the story, as well as covering the things a board artist needs to consider and do to successfully execute the director and writers vision for the scene/show/film.
Breaking down the scene. Who's in it? Where are they at in the scene? Where are they at in both physical and emotional proximity to each other?
Set yourself up for success - break down the location and working from a top-down schematic/map to clearly define the scene and your shots.
Rough thumbnails - moving through the scene sketching it out as quickly as possible. Keeping things very loose and malleable. This is where the real thought and work of storyboarding happens.
Self-editing - looking at the rough pass and seeing where things can be plussed to more effectively tell the story, and where things are dragging or holding the momentum of the scene back.
There will also be a time for a few questions at the end, but we will try to handle things during the session as we go.
