A great director knows how to emotionally motivate their shots in a way that captivates and grounds their viewers in the EXPERIENCE of the story. In this hands-on workshop, we dive deep into cinematic language to give you the tools to translate written beats into dynamic, moving, memorable, visual moments on the screen. The skills you learn in this workshop will be your secret weapon in your quest to create movie magic.

Your job as a director is not only to ‘cover’ the scene, but to orchestrate your shots so that they manipulate people on a visceral, subconscious level. Each shot is like a word or a note, and it must be perfectly formed and timed just right to create a lyrical visual story.

We’ll review and learn the building blocks of cinematic language, and use those to break down a script, beat by beat, to prepare you to not only be a good director but a GREAT director who creates unique, compelling, cinematic masterpieces. This course will fundamentally change the way you approach storytelling.

You’ll bring a 2-3 page, two person, single location scene to class. This can be an original script that you plan to shoot or a scene from a film or tv show that you have not seen recently. Once registered, you will receive more instructions.

You’ll leave this workshop with the ability to:

  • Translate a story/script into a cinematically engaging, visually compelling series of shots that engages the viewer

  • Understand how to physicalize emotional and dramatic beats

  • Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of shot choices, camera movements, and editing styles

  • Create your own dynamic shot progression/storyboards/shot lists

  • Comprehend, create, and deconstruct cinematic works and utilize the cinematic language on a deeper level

  • Understand how to break down and create storyboards for scenes, films, and television

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced filmmaker looking to sharpen your skills — this class will not disappoint. Sign up today!
