MISSION: Peter Parker was once told, “with great power comes great responsibility.” At Atlanta Film Society’s CineCamp ATL, we have the great power to connect, educate, and engage the youth to cultivate an interest in filmmaking for the aspiring filmmakers of today and tomorrow. It’s our honor to be responsible for inspiring, nurturing, and mentoring our students in the ever-growing world of filmmaking on a community-focused level.
SUMMARY: CineCamp ATL is back for 2025! This program, from July 14th - 25th, is designed to cultivate an interest in filmmaking from pre- to post production through hands-on youth education for rising 9th-12th graders. By the end of the 2-week program, students will have worked in teams to complete one short film per team that will screen at the conclusion of the program.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: As filmmaking is a team sport, the students will break into small groups, and with guided instruction and collaboration, complete a 1-5 minute film. The students will learn each phase of production, as well as the different roles and duties of each crew member. The completed films will be screened at the historic Plaza Theatre at the conclusion of the two-week program.
Each day of camp will be held at the Atlanta Film Society’s offices at Georgia State University from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM with lunch 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. Lunch will be provided.
-
The first three days of camp are dedicated to the development of each group’s scripts, as well as pre-production to help prepare for filming. This includes learning the three-act story structure, brainstorming story ideas, writing the scripts, sketching out plans through storyboards, creating a list of shots, and breaking down the script to determine what things are needed, such as props, locations, costumes, etc. This section of camp consists of instruction time, and then time for the students to work in their groups.
-
The second portion of camp starts on Thursday of Week One. Students will have one day of instruction on set safety; how to set up, operate, and break down cameras, tripods and lighting; and how to get their desired shots. They will start getting hands-on training to prepare them for Friday-Tuesday when they will be actively filming. Students will have picked out different locations on Georgia State's campus including computer labs, offices, libraries, parks, common areas, etc. where they will film their scripts.
-
Beginning on Wednesday of Week Two, students will learn Adobe Premiere Pro, the industry-standard editing software, sound design, color correction, and how to use editing to tell their stories. This includes a short instruction period, followed by hands-on learning.
-
Lastly, students will have a special screening of their completed films at the historic Plaza Theatre on Sunday, July 27th. A red carpet will be provided for photos of the students, friends, and family. Each film will be shown, followed by a Q&A with each group to talk about their process of filming, obstacles they faced, lessons they learned, and what led them to the story they chose to tell.
