Set in Fremont, CA in 2008, DÌDI (弟弟) takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through a young boy’s last month of summer before starting high school. It is an ode to the joy and chaos of adolescence including developing one’s first crush, fitting in with a new group of friends, and navigating the perfectly crafted AOL instant message and MySpace profile. Inspired by coming-of-age classics like STAND BY ME, THE 400 BLOWS, and LADYBIRD, the film adds a unique layer to the genre through the lens of a Taiwanese American boy from an immigrant family. The film showcases the complexities and shame of cultural identity (being the “whitest” or “coolest” Asian) through the mother-son story at its core between impressionable teenager Chris, aka Wang-Wang, (Izaac Wang) and his well-intentioned mother Chungsing (Joan Chen)
DÌDI (弟弟) is the feature film debut of breakout filmmaker Sean Wang, who received significant recognition and an Oscar nomination this year for his short documentary film NAI NAI & WÀI PÓ.
