Performance techniques and approaches all borrow or rebel each other. Whether you build from inside out or upside down, where you are personally at any given moment impacts your performance. Leaning heavily on sharpened instincts, Instructor Virginia Newcomb's training and practices as an actor range from Strasberg method to physical comedy to imagination divinations. She enjoys juggling different tools and has found all paths inevitably cross where you are. Where you are is the truest thing you have to work with. Since this is always changing, how do you serve the life of a character while also honoring and caring for your own? And, how do you do that when life is really hard and confusing. Virginia has searched and honed this in her own process and has begun taking it into group spaces in recent years, intersecting a healthy personal life with total freedom of expression.

This will be a very play-centric, low pressure workshop for anyone interested in deepening their relationship to creative performance – for professional performers and the performer-curious. We’ll use collaborative and private exercises to explore the different parts of yourself you bring to a performance, what parts you choose to transmute or set aside, and how to embrace when they entangle.

The last hour will be saved for open discussion to reflect on what we explored and how this informs what you’re currently creating in your work. We’ll also touch on “where you are” literally. As a largely independent and intercontinental artist, Virginia believes you can create anywhere and will share her experiences on the benefits and challenges of that. Her expertise is in independent film and live performance, and she's found this translates to most creative pursuits. We’ll shape the discussion based on the group that is gathered. Each participant will email Virginia prior so she can get a sense of your current focus and interests.

*All registered attendees can take advantage of 50% off private lessons for up to one year.

ATLFS offers two scholarships for the Performance Workshop: Creating From Where You Are class. Scholarships cover 100% of the cost of registration. Please note that anyone in financial need may apply for the scholarship, but decisions are weighted toward underserved communities (i.e. Female Filmmakers, BIPOC Filmmakers, and Student Filmmakers).

Refund request must be emailed to boxoffice@atlantafilmsociety.org 7 days prior to the date of event unless specified in the event description.
