The role of Director of Photography can be described as a marriage, or intersection, between the technical and creative. While it is obviously incredibly fundamental to have a thorough understanding of the technical, hard skills of filmmaking from a camera and lighting perspective, it is also just as important to be able to take that technical knowledge and use it to effectively serve the story.

In this course, we will:

  • Examine the aggregate process of establishing and executing the visual aesthetic of a film.

  • Explore various tips and tricks to keep in your cinematographic toolbox.

  • Consider the means of communicating with a director — meeting a director halfway to find the language that you both can understand.

Topics we will engage include:

  • Cinematographic technique and approach.

  • Storytelling methodology with camera and lighting.

  • Establishing your creative voice as a Director of Photography.

  • Being intentional with our images.

  • Utilizing the visual language of cinema to communicate with both your crew and your audience.

Who should take this course:

  • Civilians who want to be DPs.

  • DPs who already have some experience under their belt and want to expand their cinematographic toolbox.

  • Directors who want to learn how to communicate more effectively with their DPs.

  • Anyone who loves film and appreciates the art of cinematography.

Refund request must be emailed to boxoffice@atlantafilmsociety.org 7 days prior to the date of event unless specified in the event description.
